Matt Boynton, Managing Partner – Control Risk
Matt is Control Risks’ Managing Partner leading Confidential Crisis Response (Response), the global business unit responsible for advice and assistance to companies, organizations and families facing kidnap, extortion, targeted violent threats, workplace violence, illegal detention, product contamination, maritime piracy and other acute threat to life crises. He is responsible for the strategic growth and direction of the business, and for oversight of all Response related incidents on which Control Risks is advising. Matt has lectured extensively on kidnap, illegal detention, maritime piracy, extortion and non-traditional negotiation techniques, as well as creating contingency plans and education/briefing sessions for board level and senior executive management teams likely to be involved in such incidents.
Prior to his appointment to Response, Matt undertook the following executive assignments:
- Control Risks’ Representative Director and President for the company’s Tokyo based global Japanese business
- Member of Control Risks’ Asia-Pacific Regional Executive Committee with oversight of business integration and coordination throughout the region
- Senior Vice President and National Director for Crisis and Security Consulting in North America
During his career, Matt has advised executive teams for multi-national corporations in a broad range of market sectors including pharmaceutical and biotechnology, financial and insurance services, food and beverage, consumer electronics, manufacturing, and entertainment on a diverse range of complex risk issues including Business Resilience, Transactional Support (M&A, JV, pre-investment due diligence, post-investment asset divestiture), Regulatory Compliance (anti-fraud and corruption), and strategic and organizational development programs. He has actively worked with non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and high net-worth private families.
Before joining Control Risks, Matt worked for the United States Government. His government service in East Asia, Central Eurasia, and Latin America included human intelligence collection, terrorist interrogation, counter-narcotics, and counter-terrorism paramilitary operations. He has covered a broad spectrum of transnational issues including international economic movements, foreign political parties, weapons proliferation, narco-trafficking, organized crime, and Al-Qa’ida and other international terrorist activity.
Matt earned a B.A. in Political Science with International Relations Emphasis from Arizona State University and holds Associates of Arts in Foreign Language degrees in Vietnamese, French, and German from Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, California in addition to a Diploma in Haitian-Creole awarded by the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, California. Fluent in Japanese, he has provided expert commentary in both print and broadcast media, having been featured on CNBC, NHK television, and Japan’s Nikkei Shinbun among other outlets.
