Local or Global, the Challenge is the Same: Duty of Care for Security, Safety, and Political Risks

The challenges associated with managing terrorism, active assailant, political violence, travel, and safety risks are significant given current events and impacts all organizations. This session includes a panel of experts discussing organizational challenges and duty of care when managing these material risks and responding to security breach events.

Speakers:

  • Donte Stewart, manager, sr. travel intelligence & safety, executive protection, & event security – Starbucks
    Donte Stewart currently leads work that sits at the nexus of travel safety, executive protection, executive leadership safety and security, and special events at Starbucks Coffee Company. This includes journey management advisory, intelligence production, training services, and other mitigation strategies. His risk industry experience spans several functions, including corporate security advisory, intelligence analysis, and national security. For example, as Vox Media, Inc’s first-ever, full-time security leader, Donte oversaw the company’s security and anti-harassment efforts. He also served as a member of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s global security team and, and prior to that, as an intelligence officer with the Central Intelligence Agency. Donte first cut his teeth in public service as a congressional aide in the US House of Representatives.
  • John Thompson, Senior Underwriting Distribution Manager – Validus Specialty
    John Thompson has over 25 years in the insurance industry and is currently in charge of marketing for AIG’s War and Terror division.  John previously worked in marketing for Chubb, Axis, and Starr.  From 1997-2008, John managed the marketing and sales for AIG’s Defense Base Act coverage, which was heavily involved in Afghanistan and Iraq’s rebuild.  John also oversaw marketing for AIG’s multinational offerings, including product recall and kidnap & ransom.  Before beginning his career in insurance, John was an agent at IMG, representing tennis players.
  • Chris Eastman, Chief Security Officer – Cascade Management
    Chris Eastman is the Chief Security Officer for a private investment firm and is responsible for developing and maintaining a sustainable risk governance framework that directly supports business operations. Areas of direct supervision include corporate physical security, executive protection, employee journey management, protective intelligence/threat management, direct investment risk evaluation, office services, facilities, and office safety.
  • Moderator: Matt Saxon, Director of Risk Management, Seattle Public Schools
    Matt is the Manager of Risk & Loss Prevention for Seattle Public Schools. Prior to SPS he was the Sr. Manager of Risk & Insurance at REI. He has an extensive background in safety and health and risk management in a variety of industries.
